The Synoptic Gospels (Matthew, Mark, and Luke) all share the recollection that Jesus was baptized at the beginning of his adult ministry and that after he was baptized, the voice of God spoke from heaven confirming Jesus as God’s beloved son. Only Luke, however, reports that God spoke these words while Jesus was praying. Is this significant? Did Luke understand God’s speech as an answer to Jesus’ prayer?
