While Jesus was teaching he was invited to lunch by a Pharisee, who was surprised that Jesus did not participate in the ritual hand-washing that the Pharisees considered to be so important. Jesus used this as the starting point for a teaching on hypocrisy — speaking out against religious leaders who maintain the outward appearance of godliness while their inner spiritual reality is quite the opposite.
