In verses 18-21 of Chapter 5 , Paul teaches that Christians who are being filled with the Holy Spirit will, among other things, submit to one another out of reverent fear of Christ. Starting in Verse 22, Paul examines the implications of this general teaching for particular types of relationships, beginning with the relationships between wives and husbands. In our day, this teaching can be controversial but only, I think, to the extent we misunderstand it. The teaching to both wives and husbands is a teaching about submission to Christ, in whom the controversy dissolves.
