For the first time in Luke, we come to a series of moral teachings by Jesus for his disciples. These are essentially commands, however none can be obeyed except through the work of the Holy Spirit. The essence and summary of all of these is the commandment to love, even one’s enemies. This is arguably the essentially and uniquely Christian teaching. Israel knew about love, but love for one’s enemies?
